The Thermaltake Toughpower GX1 power supply we have is rated to 700w. Despite knowing what the rated value is, we do like to see how much further this can be pushed. Not only to see what the power supply is capable of, but also to ensure that the over power protections do work. In this regard, they work perfectly and this PSU was able to output another 266 watts above the rated value before they kicked in.
Given that this is about 38% above the rated amount, this is pretty impressive. It isn’t, of course, unusual for power supplies to have a little extra under the hood, but an extra 266 is certainly nice. This should translate in the real world to a potential for at least another 100w draw without any need for panic. Not, of course, that we ever recommend buying a power supply under the value you truly require.
