Thermaltake Toughpower iRGB PLUS 1000w PSU Review

How Much Does It Cost?

The Thermaltake Toughpower iRGB PLUS is what could be considered a ‘high-end’ product. As such, it’s not going to carry a cheap price tag. With a price of $149.99, however, this doesn’t exactly cost you the earth either.

This is clearly rather a lot of money. Particularly for a power supply. If we do, however, have an axe to grind here at eTeknix, it’s with people who spend thousands on their system and go cheap on the power supply.

It is worth noting that this specific power supply, however, shouldn’t really be compared with the vast majority of others. Most notably those who share its price range. Why? Well, put simply, this offers a significantly greater level of control and technologically prowess than many of them.

Performance

We said at the start of this review that the Thermaltake ‘Toughpower’ branding takes things a lot more seriously than their usual products and this was certainly reflective in it’s performance.

Across all of our testing, it performed remarkably well. A particular highlight was the ripple results which were incredibly low.

If you were to overlook all of the bells and whistles Thermaltake has included in this design, it shouldn’t overshadow the fact that as a power supply, this is one of the best out there!

Practicality & Functionality

Offering 1000 watts of power, there are very few systems out there that this wouldn’t be entirely suitable for. With the gold efficiency rating and results seen in our testing as well, as far as power supplies go, this is a fantastic design.

Unlike many of its competitors, however, the additional functions of the Thermaltake Toughpower iRGB power supply does make it stand out from the crowd. Remember, this has a high-level of performance control and via various apps can even be controlled by voice command!

Should I Buy One?

Being a 1000 watt power supply, there is, of course, only going to be so many of you whose PC requires this level of performance. We are very much in the realms of multiple graphics cards and high-performance specifications here.

Considering how much all that costs though, you’re a fool if you go and buy a cheap power supply.

Yes, the Thermaltake Toughpower iRGB PLUS does carry a pretty substantial price tag. The performance it offers, however, is certainly beyond question. Regardless of whether the additions of Chroma and Alexa controls impress you, this is still an exceptionally strong power supply and, as an overall package, certainly one of the best currently on the market.
