This Is How Much Each Publisher Will Save by Removing Discs From PlayStation Games
Sony has already started warning users about the end of discs on PS5. It has done so with labels on its console boxes and with other warnings on accessories such as the optional disc drive. Sony has also made it clear that this is not an experiment, but the future, and there is no going back.
The end of discs on PS5 will begin in January 2028. From that date, games will only be available digitally, and new games will no longer be released on disc. This will give Sony an advantage by allowing it to sell more games through the PS Store, end the second-hand market and game sharing, and increase its revenue.
PlayStation Publishers Could Save Millions by Ending Physical Game Discs
It will also allow developers and publishers to move away from discs. By removing physical discs, it is estimated that companies will save the amount they currently pay Sony to produce them. This cost is said to be between 15% and 20% of the game’s price, which equals $10.50 per disc for a game priced at $70 and $12 per disc for a game priced at $80.
By not releasing GTA VI in physical format, Rockstar and Take-Two could save $12 for each game sold. When that amount is multiplied by millions of copies, it means savings of many millions of dollars in costs. This is why so many developers and publishers support removing physical discs.
Whether we like it or not, the future is digital, and in that future we will have more and more problems getting products that truly belong to us. On PC, we will still have GOG, which actually lets us download games and use them with complete freedom, as if they were truly ours.
