Toshiba OCZ TR200 480GB SATA3 SSD Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing and Availability

As the review is done prior to the launch date and published at the same time, we only have the MSRP prices at this time. The Toshiba OCZ TR200 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB will set you back £75.99, £135.99, and £252.99 respectively. At £0.28 per GB, you get a lot of capacity for your money.

Overview

Today we’ve seen another great Toshiba OCZ SSD for the entry-level market. We didn’t break any records, but that was clear before we started. That’s not what the TR200 is designed to do. Instead, it is a perfect drive to replace your ageing mechanical hard disk drive. An HDD is loud, consumes a lot of power in comparison, and it is a lot slower. With an offering like the TR200, you get a cheap entry into the speedy world of solid state drives.

The pure physics of the components does offer some limitation when compared to other drives built with MLC. That’s a given and if that’s what you wanted, then you’d be looking at the OCZ VX500 instead. The TR200 is built with TLC NAND, more specific 64-layered 3D BiCS flash. With it, you get fast a sequential performance while continuous write operations aren’t anything special. Moving on to random read and write operations and we see another area where the drive shines. With 80K+ IOPS at both reading and writing, the TR200 has nothing to be ashamed of. The TR200 also boost a great endurance rating and a 3-year warranty which both aren’t given for budget drives.

On top of a good drive, you also get an excellent software toolbox.

Pros

  • Perfect as HDD replacement with up to 960GB
  • DevSLP for low power consumption in mobile systems
  • Classic form factor for compatibility
  • Good performance
  • Low asking price

Cons

  • Continues sequential writes

Neutral

  • Entry-level drive, perfect for first-time adopters

“The latest technologies packed into a classic form factor for little money, that’s the Toshiba OCZ TR200.”
