Testing & Results

Using our testing methodology, 6 results were compiled. This was based on both versions of the game running at 3 different graphics settings. We will, however, start with the more basic end of the stick to see how these games performed under less strenuous circumstances.

1080p Resolution at Medium Settings – Battle Benchmark

Initially, the results are comparatively very close indeed, with only 0.1 frames per second separating the two versions of the game.

So far, it’d be fair to say that both versions of the game run equally well. Despite the non-Denuvo version running slightly faster, 0.1 is simply not a large margin of error to deem it a winner.

1080p Resolution at Medium Settings – Campaign Benchmark

In the campaign mode, the non-Denuvo version sneaks it again, but again only by a mild 0.9fps. This is, again, far too small a margin to draw any conclusions.

1440p Resolution at High Settings – Battle Benchmark

Now, in terms of the Denuvo comparison, this is where things start getting interesting. At the higher resolution and graphics settings, the non-Denuvo version has a clear advantage of 3.8 frames per second. While that might sound like a small number, in gaming terms that can be more than a little significant. As you can see in the charts below, without Denuvo, Total War Three Kingdoms runs at nearly 60fps. With it, the figure is closer to 50.

1440p Resolution at High Settings – Campaign Benchmark

In campaign mode, we again see a pretty comfortable victory margin for the non-Denuvo version which averaged 3.4fps higher than its counterpart. Again, a small but significant amount.

1440p Resolution at Ultra Settings – Battle Benchmark

Just for the fun of it, we decided to crank the graphics settings to full to see if the games performance intensity was having any effect on the Denuvo results. The bottom line is, we don’t know.

Similar to the 1080p benchmarks, this time around the Denuvo version just managed to squeak ahead, but again by small margins.

1440p Resolution at Ultra Settings – Campaign Benchmark

In our final test in campaign mode, the Denuvo version again just edges it. Not enough though to declare an actual winner.

In truth, based on the 1440p ‘High’ tests, we didn’t expect these results to be so comparatively close.
