Trump Temporarily Removes New Tariffs on Mobile Phones, Monitors, and Some Electronics
After the controversy caused by the new tariffs on imported products to the United States, President Trump has decided to provide some temporary relief to consumers and tech companies. On Friday night, he announced that several electronic products would be exempt from these new tariffs.
Products Affected by the Tariffs
The list of products includes mobile phones, semiconductors, electronic components, GPUs, and monitors. This means many tech companies in the United States can continue selling their products without raising prices—at least for now. Trump also mentioned that this period could be used by companies to invest in manufacturing and assembling products in the United States, thus avoiding such tariffs in the future.
Why the Move Was Made
The 90-day delay for applying these new tariffs, which was announced earlier last week, did not seem enough to calm things down. The United States has a large market for mobile phones and computers, including major local brands like Apple, which manufactures about 80% of its phones in China. But Apple isn’t the only company that follows this model—most tech brands in the U.S. also manufacture their products in Asia.
With this temporary measure, companies now have time to consider other solutions before facing a price hike that could easily double the cost of some products made in China and sold in the U.S.
