TSMC to Launch 3nm Production in the U.S. by 2027
TSMC is increasing its efforts in the United States. With the growing demand for semiconductor supply nationwide, under the “Made in USA” narrative of former President Trump, the company has significantly upgraded its Arizona facility. This includes a massive $165 billion investment in America, along with the relocation of new facilities and research and development centers.
TSMC’s Expansion in Arizona
According to a report by Ctee (thanks Wccftech), TSMC is also accelerating the setup of its 3nm production lines in Arizona. The company plans to bring the necessary equipment to the Arizona facility by September, with production expected to start by 2027. This means that the United States is now only two years behind Taiwan in terms of cutting-edge semiconductor production. This is a huge milestone, especially considering that just a year ago, there were no signs of TSMC producing advanced nodes in the U.S.
The timeline for the completion of TSMC’s new semiconductor factories around the world is detailed in the TSMC Semiconductor Supply Chain Factory Construction Timetable. One notable entry is the plan for the Fab F21 in Arizona, USA, which is set for two distinct phases. Phase 1 (P1) with the N5 node was completed in May 2023, while Phase 2 (P2), dedicated to the N3 node, is expected to be completed by Q3 2026. The Fab F22 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, will focus on the 2nm node.
TSMC is truly making the United States its second home, and it seems ready to expand its production in America by introducing nodes down to A16 (1.6nm). The company is also reportedly planning to open new advanced chip factories and even packaging facilities, which it seems to desperately need.
However, TSMC’s moves also reflect the changing political climate in recent months and further complicate Taiwan’s position. With the rise of U.S. foundries and the push from Chinese foundries toward self-sufficiency, the protective shield around Taiwan may soon collapse completely, leaving China free to occupy Taiwan without interference.
