How Much Does it Cost?

Amazingly, the Turtle Beach Recon 70 Gaming Headset is available now for just £29.99 in the UK and and $39.95 in the US. That’s bloody cheap for a headset of this quality. Plus, it’s available in colours/variations for the Nintendo Switch (the one we tested), Xbox One, Xbox One White, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 White, and PlayStation 4 Midnight Red. They’re all technically the same, it’s a colour change. That being said, they all look superb. Please note that models can be under different names, such as 70X (Xbox) and 70N (Nintendo), but again, they are the same range.

Overview

The latest from Turtle Beach offers some truly fierce competition at this price range. Is it perfect? Nah, not really, it’s an affordable headset and it shows in the fairly limited features and materials. That being said, it’s one of the best examples you’ll find in this price range, that’s for sure. The only real competition is from the Roccat Renga, and the HyperX Cloud Stinger; both good options in their own respects. However, the bulk of £25 to £30 headsets are unknown brand imports that don’t look worth the plastic they’re stamped out of.

Performance

Audiophile blow-your-brains-out performance isn’t on tap here. However, the drivers are what we’ve come to expect from Turtle Beach over the years. They have plenty of volume, a decent amount of bass that isn’t over-driven or distorted, clear mids, and bright and clear highs. Even the microphone can hold its own with models that cost more than twice as much.

The multi-format support, and plug and play nature make it very appealing too. If you have multiple consoles, mobile devices and a PC, you can save a fortune by only needing the one headset. The fixed microphone does make it a little impractical (see: makes you look silly) wearing it outside as headphones, but you could do it.

Should I Buy One?

It’s hard to think of a reason not to, if you have £30 for a headset, you’re not going to find better than this. HyperX and Roccat have some strong competition, but these days even Roccat is owned by Turtle Beach anyway. If you’re wanting to step up the build quality though, the Turtle Beach Atlas One would be your next stop at just £39.99/$49.95.
