Performance

At £150, the Turtle Beach 420X certainly isn’t cheap, so you would expect some pretty premium performance given the fierce competition in this price range. You’ll be glad to hear that it lives up to my expectations in this respect. Of course, everyone’s preferences are different when it comes to audio performance, but I found the 420X to tick a lot of boxes. The first thing I noticed was the maximum volume, this headset can really kick up a fuss, more than enough to give yourself a massive headache and while I don’t advise you rock away at 100% volume, it’s great for boosting audio on quiet audio sources.

The bass performance is great, offering a lot of detail at low frequencies that brings out a punchy quality to movies, music and games. The mid ranges are nicely detailed, which made guitar-centric music really shine and the treble is bright and clear. Across the whole volume range, the audio sounds balanced and even when pushed, I couldn’t find any issues with distortion in the sound.

The stock performance is a little bass heavy, but the profile button on the side quickly fixes that, with bass, treble, bass and treble and vocal boost modes, as well as a flat mode, so you should be able to easily tailor the performance to your personal preference, or to whatever best suits the media you’re enjoying.

The microphones are pretty standard stuff, nothing fancy, but bright and clear, which is about everything you need. What did surprise me is how well the in-line microphone worked and for making Skype/phone calls on my phone and tablet, it was a welcome addition to the headsets gaming capabilities. It also means you can use the headset as headphones, perfect for your mp3 player or similar device.
