This might not be a surprise as most companies are always looking at ways of making more money. It seems Twitter is now considering pushing adverts into users’ timeline streams. Twitter executives certainly met at the Cannes Lion festival to discuss the possibility of offering ‘promoted tweets’ to advertisers.
These promoted tweets would appear in between posts from the tweeters you follow, making them much harder to ignore than the adverts placed around the site. Of course this idea also allows for this implementation to take place on a mobile level as well. It has been said that tweets from brands the user follows might get ‘special treatment’ and appear high up on their stream despite the time of their posting, which of course gives greater exposure for the advertiser.
Currently twitter only offers promoted tweets at the top of lists of ‘popular discussion’ (or things that are ‘trending’). These are a lot less intrusive than tweets to the user-defined main stream of tweets and as such have not been met with resistance, but is is guaranteed this new idea for advertising will not be liked by all users.
