Ubisoft Cancels Star Wars Outlaws Sequel, Insider Claims
Recent comments from Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, suggested the company may be stepping away from the Star Wars license. He mentioned that Star Wars Outlaws had poor sales, partly due to what he described as a low point for the Star Wars franchise. According to a well-known insider, the sequel to Star Wars Outlaws has now been canceled.
The open-world game had a rushed release and wasn’t in the best shape at launch. Although updates improved the experience over time, these changes may have come too late for Ubisoft. The game’s sales ultimately did not meet expectations.
Franchise Struggles and Shifting Priorities
Guillemot explained that one of the major issues was that the brand it belonged to was in an unstable situation. This was in reference to the lack of new Star Wars movies and the lukewarm reception of some recent Star Wars series.
Well-known insider Tom Henderson said on the Insider Gaming podcast that there were early plans for a sequel to Star Wars Outlaws, but these were dropped at an early stage. He noted that although the original game launched almost a year ago, much of the team’s time was spent fixing issues and releasing DLC. The sequel, he said, “was never in production” and wasn’t a fully confirmed project.
The only leaked sales figure shows that the game sold one million copies in its first month—low for a blockbuster, especially one tied to the Star Wars brand. Other upcoming Star Wars games include Star Wars Jedi 3, Star Wars: Zero Company, Star Wars: Eclipse, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, which is still in development. Star Wars Outlaws is expected to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in September.
