Ubisoft Toronto Lays Off 40 Employees From Splinter Cell Remake Team
According to a report by MobileSyrup, a Ubisoft spokesperson confirmed that the Toronto-based team has laid off 40 employees.
This move is part of the French company’s restructuring plan. Ubisoft is currently reorganizing into five “creative houses” focused on specific genres or types of projects. However, this plan has also led to the closure of Ubisoft Halifax and the cancellation of several projects, including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.
What Ubisoft Said About the Layoffs
“This decision was not taken lightly and does not in any way reflect the talent, dedication, or contributions of the individuals affected. Our priority now is to support them through this transition with comprehensive severance packages and robust career placement assistance,” Ubisoft said in a statement to MobileSyrup.
The company also confirmed that Ubisoft Toronto is still working on Splinter Cell Remake, despite the layoffs. The game was announced in December 2021, but no gameplay has been shown so far.
Ubisoft Toronto had around 500 employees before these layoffs. The studio previously led the development of titles such as Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Watch Dogs Legion, and Far Cry 6, and also supported projects like Star Wars Outlaws. In addition, the team assists other studios with content development, including work on Rainbow Six Siege.
For now, development on Splinter Cell Remake continues, even as Ubisoft moves forward with its restructuring plan.
