Undisclosed Sports Game Pirated 355K Times In 2 Weeks

Piracy is a major issue on the PC, but it is something that divides opinion somewhat. Either way though, with the main data files downloaded onto a hard drive, it is clearly a lot earlier to do on a computer than on a console. Just how prevalent is it though? Well, in a report via DSOGaming, Irdeto (the company who owns the Denuvo anti-piracy software) has reported that an undisclosed sports game has been subjected hugely to piracy.

In the report, it is suggested that in the games opening two weeks, it was illegally downloaded at least 355,000 times!

That’s A Lot!

Irdeto has said: “Piracy is a threat that is firmly established in the games industry and, as our research suggests. It can result in potentially huge revenue losses for publishers if their games are compromised within the 14-day window following release. With this in mind. It is crucial for publishers to implement security strategies that make their games as difficult as possible to crack and reverse engineer. This way they will be able to better protect the revenues that allow them to continue to create such compelling games.”

With the game not being named, it’s difficult to know if it did include Denuvo. Given that they have made such a big deal out of it, we’d doubt it!

Devil’s Advocate!

There are many arguments surrounding pirating games that are not explored in the data. For example, figures seem to suggest that a significant portion of people who download an illegal version often go on to legitimately buy the game. With the lack of demo releases, a pirated version can sometimes be your only option to ‘try before you buy’.

What Game Was It?

Ahh, well that one is hard to say. It could be one of many. Fifa 19, PES 19, Madden 19, the only one that it couldn’t be really is Football Manager 19. Why? Well, that only released last week (albeit, that has been cracked and did include Denuvo).

What do you think? Is piracy for PC games a major issue? Do you think people who download pirated games go on to buy it legitimately? – Let us know in the comments!
