Unofficial Halo: Combat Evolved Browser Port Arrives With Split-Screen Co-Op and 128 Person Multiplayer

Developer Mitchell Hynes has successfully delivered a free, unofficial web browser port of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved. Announced recently via X, the project allows gamers to jump straight into the full campaign without the need for traditional installations or dedicated hardware. Built upon the recent decompilation of the original Xbox code, the port specifically avoids the assets and alterations from the 2003 PC version. Hynes was quick to point out that there is “no Gearbox Master Chief” in this release, ensuring purists get an authentic console experience straight through their web browser.
Performance And Multiplayer Features
The community response has been massive. Within the first five hours of availability, the game saw nearly 20,000 plays across 115 countries. Performance remains solid, with players reporting an average of 94 frames per second. However, Hynes has warned that the port does not run well on mobile operating systems like iOS or Android, making a desktop PC the recommended platform for the best experience.
While the original Xbox release was famously capped at 16 players for competitive multiplayer, this new browser edition aims significantly higher. Hynes has implemented an experimental multiplayer mode supporting up to 128 players. Early testers have reported that while the campaign and split-screen co-op work brilliantly, the 128-player mode is still highly untested and prone to issues.
Features
- Platform Support: Playable directly in modern PC web browsers, with mobile devices not recommended.
- Game Version: Based on the decompiled original Xbox build, omitting the 2003 Gearbox PC port changes.
- Campaign: Fully playable from start to finish, complete with working split-screen co-op.
- Multiplayer: Experimental support for up to 128 players, though stability may vary.
- Performance: Averages around 94 FPS on standard PC hardware.
Halo
Honestly, it’s mad, there’s not been a good Halo game in 15 years (Reach), and now the developers have been canned and the game given the bloody Activision, and it’s clear many people just want a solid, easily accessible OG game to play co-op or simple online modes with their friends. Not hyper-upscaled textures and a third or fourth major re-hashing… shocked.
