Update on the Gigabyte faulty boards for the UK

As it turns out, the recent reports regarding the faulty boards and the solutions generally mentioned were limited to certain regions, as for the United Kingdom, things were cleared out with more information.

For those that don’t remember, this started with a Taiwanese overclocker who saw his motherboard go up in smokes, so to speak, but what was originally thought to be specific to a single board later turned out to be spread on a wider level (for more details, see this article first, then this one).

The solutions that were mentioned in the previous articles are limited to the Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu area, as for the UK, things are a little different.

First of all, the worldwide recall is not worldwide but varies with each country, as for the UK, the recall is of the old faulty BIOS. The faulty BIOS were removed from the official Gigabyte UK website and replaced with the correct version (see below for link).

As for the free replacement, once again limited to the regions mentions above, as for the UK, due to the differences between RMA policies, no replacement is offered, only the BIOS update. Same applies for the warranty, no lifetime extension in the UK.

As for the way the new BIOS update affects the board itself, the new update will completely solve the issue and won’t affect the overclocking abilities, as was proved with the successful achievement of a new world record with the Gigabyte X79-UD3 motherboard by the respected overclocker HiCookie.

To sum up, the recall, free replacement and extension of warranty for the faulty motherboards is only applied in the area of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu.

As for the BIOS update of the faulty motherboards for the UK, here they are:

  • GA-X79-UD3 – update to BIOS F7
  • GA-X79-UD5 – update to BIOS F7
  • GA-X79-UD7 – update to BIOS F7
  • G1.Assassin 2 – update to BIOS F7

eTeknix would like to apologize for any confusion that may have been caused by the misinformation.
