A common videogame trope involves the player being guided through a level by a helpful voice transmitted over radio – think Atlas in BioShock – but a new mobile game has turned the tables. Mayday! Deep Space, written by Robopocalypse author Daniel H. Wilson, asks you, the player, to guide the last survivor of a viral outbreak aboard a stranded spaceship to safety by your voice alone.
The survivor must be directed through the corridors of the USS Appaloosa, avoiding the infected crew members, by your voice commands. The player has an overhead view of the ship’s deck, with the survivor marked by a blue dot and the infected by red dots. Simple voice commands like “stop”, “go left, “go right”, and “run forward” – though a walkie-talkie interface – protect the life of the one remaining crew member.
The game features voice acting from Osric Chau of TV show Supernatural, plus Bitsie Tulloch and Claire Coffee from NBC’s Grimm.
Mayday! Deep Space is available now for iOS devices, priced £1.99 ($2.99) on the App Store.
