Valve working on a gaming console running on Steam

News from inside Valve are that the company is currently working on developing PC hardware to run with its Steam software in a possible “Steam Box” bundle.

According to The Verge, a similar hint to such a project was dropped by the co-founder himself, Gabe Newell, during an interview at Penny Arcade. It was later clarified by it own research following the interview.

People have been pondering on what Valve has in stores since the company took out a patent for a controller hardware last year. If a product such as a “Steam Box” software was to be released, it would be at the centre of an open gaming universe (in a way similar to how Google handles Android).

Additional gear could be produced following the release, with Alienware X51 rumoured to be working on an early version already. The underlying Steam Box software would be readily available to any company willing to partner.
