MSI Video Reveals How to Install Threadripper X399 CPU

How to Install Threadripper X399 CPU

The latest AMD CPU is almost here, and the hype for what this CPU has to offer to the world is building up. Of course, we’ve seen many leaked bits of information about this CPU, but until it’s on our test benches, it all needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. Fortunately, the latest leak comes in the form of a video from MSI that we’re 100% confident is legitimate. The new video shows you how to install the latest AMD Threadripper CPU into an X399 chipset motherboard. However, it’s not as simple as you might think, and it clearly differs from the way you install the Ryzen AM4 socket chips or the Intel X299 chips.

Step 1

First, you’ll need what looks like a custom head screw driver, perhaps a Torx, but the size is unknown. I would assume that the CPU or motherboard comes with the tool required to perform this task. Three screws need to be loosened, two at the bottom, and one at the top. Once done, you can lift up two hinged sections.

Step 2

With the top cover raised, the inner section has slide-in rails for the CPU. The CPU simply slides down (vertically) into the mounting bracket, where the orange retention clips appear to hold it in place. Obviously, you can see here that the CPU has no pins, unlike the current AM4 chips.

Step 3

First, close down the inner layer, lining up the orange guide with the screw holes on the motherboard. The first bracket will help you get an accurate soft-fit before screwing down the top cover.

Step 4

Then it’s simply a process of tightening the three screws of the top bracket to lock the CPU firmly in place.

Step 5

Of course, remember to apply a nice big lump of thermal paste, as this CPU has a huge surface area to cover, so it’ll need a little more than your typical consumer CPU. Finally, you need to screw down your CPU to the CPU socket, similarly to how the LGA2066 socket behaves on Intel’s HEDT CPUs.
