What We Played – Top 10 PC Games of 2013

You would be forgiven for not realising just how old some of these games are already, but 2013 was ten years ago now, a full decade ago, and well… that just seems a bit crazy to me. Yet, 2013 was the year that Microsoft released the Xbox One, Sony released the PlayStation 4, and Nintendo were busy trying to make headway with the late 2012 release of the Nintendo Wii U… We’ve seen a lot of things come and go in the world in that time, but let’s roll the clock back. What were we all playing just ten years ago? And how many of you are still playing these games today? Let us know in the comments section below!

Bioshock Infinite

BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter game set in the flying city of Columbia in 1912. You play as Booker DeWitt, a former soldier and private detective who is sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman with mysterious powers who has been imprisoned since childhood. Along the way, you will face enemies, puzzles, and moral choices as you uncover the secrets of Columbia and its fanatical leader, Comstock. The game features stunning graphics, a rich story, and a variety of weapons and abilities that can be used in combat and exploration.

DOTA 2

DOTA 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that was released in 2013 by Valve. It is the official sequel to Defence of the Ancients (DotA), a popular mod for Warcraft III. In DOTA 2, two teams of five players each compete to destroy the enemy’s base and ancient, a large structure that is the source of their power. Each player controls a unique hero with different abilities and roles, and can level up, buy items, and cooperate with their teammates. DOTA 2 is known for its deep and complex gameplay, its large and diverse roster of heroes, and its thriving competitive scene that features millions of dollars in prize money. DOTA 2 is free to play and available on Steam.

The Stanley Parable

The Stanley Parable is a first-person exploration game that was released by Galactic Cafe. It is a remake of a 2011 mod for Half-Life 2. In The Stanley Parable, you play as Stanley, an office worker who finds himself alone in his workplace. A narrator guides you through various scenarios and choices, but you can also disobey or ignore him. The game is a meta-commentary on the nature of choice, narrative, and video games. It has multiple endings and paths, depending on your actions and decisions. The game is known for its humour, creativity, and unpredictability.

Saints Row IV

Saints Row IV is an open-world action-comedy game that follows the leader of the Third Street Saints, who has become the President of the United States and must face an alien invasion led by the Zin Empire. The game features over-the-top weapons, such as the Dubstep Gun and the Inflat-O-Ray, and superpowers, such as super speed and telekinesis, that allow the player to wreak havoc in a simulated version of Steelport. The game also includes co-op mode, customization options, and various challenges and side missions.

Metro Last Light

Metro: Last Light is a post-apocalyptic FPS game that takes place in the year 2034, in the underground tunnels of Moscow, where the survivors of a nuclear war face threats from mutants, bandits, and rival factions. The game follows Artyom, a ranger who holds the key to humanity’s salvation. The game features a dark and atmospheric setting, stealth and survival elements, weapon customization, and moral choices that affect the story.

Call of Duty: Ghost

Call of Duty: Ghost is a military FPS game that takes place in a near-future scenario, where the United States has been weakened by a devastating attack and faces a new global threat. The game follows the elite soldiers of the Ghosts, a special operations unit that fights to defend the remnants of America. The game features a single-player campaign, a multiplayer mode with various maps and modes, and an Extinction mode, where players cooperate to fight against alien creatures. It received mixed reviews from critics who praised its graphics, gameplay, and Extinction mode, but criticized its story, characters, and lack of innovation… yet it’s COD so it sold by the bucket load.

Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4 is a military FPS game that takes place in a near-future scenario, where the world is on the brink of war and the US faces a new enemy. The game follows a group of elite soldiers known as Tombstone Squad, who are involved in various missions across the globe. The game features a single-player campaign, a multiplayer mode with up to 64 players on large maps with dynamic weather and destruction, and a Commander mode, where one player can oversee the battlefield and give orders to their team.

Batman: Arkham Origins

Batman: Arkham Origins is an action-adventure game that serves as a prequel to the previous Batman: Arkham games. The game follows a young and inexperienced Batman as he faces eight deadly assassins who are hired by the crime lord Black Mask to kill him on Christmas Eve. The game features a large open-world Gotham City, where Batman can use his gadgets, skills, and detective mode to fight enemies and solve crimes. The game also includes a multiplayer mode, where players can team up as Batman and Robin or join the Joker’s or Bane’s gangs.

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider is an action-adventure game that reimagines the origins of Lara Croft, the iconic heroine of the Tomb Raider franchise. The game follows Lara as she survives a shipwreck and finds herself stranded on a mysterious island full of secrets and dangers. The game features a large open-world environment, where Lara can explore, scavenge, craft, and fight using various weapons and skills. The game also includes a multiplayer mode, where players can compete or cooperate in different modes and maps.

Crysis 3

Crysis 3 is a sci-fi FPS game that continues the story of super-soldier Prophet, who returns to New York City in 2047 to find it covered by a giant nanodome created by the corrupt C.E.L.L. corporation. The game features a single-player campaign, where Prophet must fight against C.E.L.L. and the alien Ceph using his advanced Nanosuit and a powerful Predator Bow that can fire different types of arrows. The game also includes a multiplayer mode, where players can compete or cooperate in various modes and maps with their own customized Nanosuits.
