Windows 11 26H2 Has Entered the Release Preview Stage and Is Getting Closer to Launch for Everyone

Microsoft has taken another step in the development of its operating system by rolling out the Windows 11 26H2 update (Build 26300.9278) to the Release Preview channel. This stage represents one of the final steps before its arrival for the general public.

Unlike previous versions that required a major reinstall, version 26H2 does not completely replace the operating system for users who are already running versions 24H2 or 25H2. Microsoft is delivering it as an enablement package, since all three versions share the same servicing branch. This means that many of the features have already been delivered through the usual monthly patches and are simply activated when this update is installed.

Windows 11 26H2 Brings Major Taskbar and Start Menu Changes Closer to Release

Among the most expected visual and usability changes is the ability to place the taskbar at the top or on the sides of the screen, as well as the option to use a smaller taskbar and change the size of the Start menu. Controls are also being added to hide sections of the Start menu and adjust the information shown in Windows Search.

One important detail is that Windows 11 26H1 remains on a separate kernel, developed specifically for new hardware such as Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 platforms. For this reason, devices running 26H1 will not be able to update directly to 26H2 and will receive their own update branch in a later version.

For businesses, 26H2 enables features such as Windows settings backup, quick app actions on the taskbar, and changes to File Explorer by default. In addition, the arrival of 26H2 restarts the official support cycle of 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Members of the Insider program can already try it through Windows Update or WSUS servers.
