Windows 11 Will Introduce Automatic Switching Between Light and Dark Mode
Microsoft remains focused on offering the features that users are asking for in its most popular operating system, Windows 11. Over the last few weeks, we have seen it make several highly requested changes, although the software giant also needs to optimize it for more modest computers that now come with only 8 GB of RAM. One of the latest options discovered that will be added is automatic dark mode.
This option is active in many operating systems, especially on Android and iOS mobile devices, although it is also available in Linux distributions. Windows 11 had resisted adding this simple change, which will adapt to the time of day to show Windows with white colors or with a theme where black is the main color. As we can see on X/Twitter, a user has discovered that Microsoft is working on this feature in an experimental build of the operating system.
Windows 11 May Use Your Location to Automatically Switch Between Light and Dark Mode
The changes discovered include phrases such as:
- “Schedule auto mode”
- “Mode only changes when PC is idle”
- “This prevents the mode from changing while you’re working or in meetings”
- “Turn on location services to automatically schedule dark mode. When location services are turned off, dark mode is active from [START] to [END].”
Basically, these phrases tell us that light and dark mode will be scheduled automatically, and that the mode will only change when the PC is idle. This will prevent the change from happening while you are working on the PC or in a meeting. For this change to work automatically, you will need to have location services turned on, since if they are turned off, dark mode will be activated from [START] to [END].
Other details are still unknown, such as whether Microsoft will allow these changes to match sunrise and sunset times, although the need to turn on location gives us many clues. Hopefully, it will soon leave the experimental phase and be introduced for testing by Windows Insider users so that we can try it.
