Windows 8 to support ultra high resolution

Microsoft is not only having a go at the tablet market with Windows 8, but judging by the supported resolutions, Retina Display as well.

According to what seems to be slides by Microsoft displaying the ‘Common sizes for Windows 8’, the company is aiming at tablets as little as 10.1″ with resolutions available being both 1920×1080 and 1366×768, both big enough in their own right, however it doesn’t stop there as even 2560×1440 is expected to be supported.

With such high resolutions on smaller tablets, the company is set to rival Apple’s Retina Display by offering DPI as high as 291 on smaller form factors, while also offering up to 109DPI on bigger screens.

One advantage Microsoft does have to offer compared Apple, as well as Google, in terms of display is that it is going for 16:9 resolutions, which will result in a different form factor. Apple on its part is keeping 4:3, even though this isn’t the best choice for video playback, it does make more sense in terms of ergonomics.

Another good factor coming with the higher screen resolution is the image scaling, which will make the image crisper and give this higher sense of quality and better graphics.

As for the minimum resolutions, Microsoft is planning Windows 8 not to go under the 1024×768 bar as they see no point going under that mark.

Now, whether theses specifications will reveal themselves to be a good point or not, as long as it isn’t applied in reality, what’s the point of the theory?
