Witcher 3 Dev Reveals Why Iorveth Was Cut from the Game

It’s true that Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a massive game with plenty of content, but sources suggest that the game was actually supposed to be even larger and include even more iconic characters. One such a character was Iorveth – a commander of a Scoia’tael unit and a well-known human hater. During Witcher 2, the player could choose from one of two storylines, one of which involved Vernon Roche, while the other focused on Iorveth. Therefore, since Roche actually makes an appearance in Witcher 3, it would have made sense for Iorveth to appear as well in some capacity, but it looks like that particular piece of content was cut from the game. In a recent post on the official The Witcher forums, CDPR’s Philipp Webber has shed some light on the decision in order to make sure that players who chose to go with Iorveth in the previous Witcher installment would understand the team’s reasoning.

“I’d like to give some clarification for this discussion. Like our writers already mentioned a few months ago, Iorveth used to be part of the game. However, as time and development went on, this chunk of the story had to be cut for multiple reasons, but it was quite a big part of the game. At this time, it was simply not possible to “just” create another quest that would replace it and we had to finish and polish the rest of the game. It’s perfectly natural that parts of the game are cut in development, and in this case it unfortunately hit a part that Iorveth had a big role in. And yes, of course you can come up with many ways and ideas how to still cram him in there somehow, but that’s not our way. If we do something like that, we do it right and we do the character justice. It’s not easy to make decisions like that, so I hope you can respect that.”

This definitely sounds like something CD Projekt RED would do, as instead of potentially rushing the character’s story and ruining it in some way, they decided to leave him be, and this was probably for the best. As far as the upcoming Blood and Wine expansion for Witcher 3 is concerned, the developers have revealed that it was designed as a finale to Geralt’s story, which is why gamers should probably start it after they have completed the main storyline.
