Worldwide PC sales lower than expected

Research firms IDC and Gartner have published figures regarding PC sales worldwide, it is important to note these figures do not include the sale of tablets, androids, phones or iPads. Only Desktop PC’s, Netbooks and Laptops were included. Q2 of 2011 saw around a 2-2.6% growth in PC sales depending on which source you use. 85.2 million units were shipped in total and the main growth has been seen in Asia.

Netbook sales have plummeted as they are losing ground to iPads and Tablets. Also Europe, America and the Middle East saw sales fall 4.8% whilst Asia and Latin American saw 10% growth mostly stemming from India and China’s rapid growth. Lenovo came out firing with figures showing a 22% rise in shipments from them. Meaning HP, Dell and Lenovo now make the top three whilst Acer was pushed down to 4th and Lenovo is closing the gap between the big two HP and Dell quite rapidly. ASUS came in 5th place.

Analysts are blaming the slow growth on the decline of netbooks and the investment reallocation to setting up high cost cloud and virtualisation programs. 2012 is expected to bring better results.
