WWE Confirms New Upcoming Wrestling ‘RPG’ Gaming Title

If you were to ask me to name five WWE wrestlers of the modern era, I honestly think I’d struggle to get past two (and maybe just one if Brock Lesnar has retired). On the other hand, though, I do still have a lot of love and nostalgia for wrestling in the mid to late 80s and throughout the 90s. Of these wrestlers, I could name many!

With this in mind, therefore, I’ll freely concede that I take a lot of (possibly guilty) pleasure out of the WWE 2K gaming franchise. – With the most recent WWE 2K22 iteration being like a breath of fresh air when compared to the, frankly, completely unfinished 2K20, the world of video game wrestling is, thankfully, back on track. – And following a report via Eurogamer, it’s seemingly doing so well that WWE has just confirmed that an upcoming ‘wrestling RPG’, yes a role-playing game, is set to be announced in the very near future!

WWE Confirms Wrestling RPG!

Speaking during their most recent financial call, WWE chief brand manager Stephanie McMahon (Vince’s daughter for those of you who are really out of touch with modern wrestling) has said:

“[We] recently signed a new deal in the role-playing game space that will be announced soon. We also continue to evaluate the metaverse, both walled garden environments that already exist as well as decentralised properties, look to hear more in the coming months.

Gaming is a priority for WWE to reach our next-gen audience with over 80 percent of WWE’s audience self-identifying as gamers.”

So, what could this be? Well, while it would appear that Take-Two Interactive will have involvement in the title, this isn’t going to be a generic wrestling game. Quite frankly, this would appear to represent something very different indeed! – I mean, just think about it for a minute, what kind of form would a wrestling RPG take anyway?… You explore cavernous dungeons as ‘The Undertaker’ wrestling goblins into submission to earn XP which you can then spend to buy/learn new moves?

Admittedly though, for as bizarrely interesting as this could be, it’s also equally possible that they’re just teasing the upcoming release of a (presumably pretty disappointing and microtransaction riddled) mobile game. – Who knows, maybe Raid Shadow Legends is getting a WWE spin-off! – With something expected to be confirmed in the next few weeks though, this one is going to be interesting!
