The rumored system for converting Xbox games on disc into digital copies is finally official. The news comes directly from Asha Sharma, with the Microsoft executive leading the Xbox team taking to social media to explain how the system works and what it is designed to do.
“Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving,” Asha Sharma said on Twitter/X before announcing that, starting next week, Xbox Insider users “can unlock a digital entitlement for supported physical games. We’ll start with thousands of titles and add more as we can.”

The animation shown alongside the message from the Xbox team boss displays a banner informing users that the digital license for the game inserted into the Xbox Series X disc drive has been unlocked.
However, it is not yet known whether Microsoft’s new feature will start automatically when a disc is inserted into the console or whether, as seems more likely, users will have to give clear permission by following some steps inside the Xbox dashboard.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Jason Ronald told The Verge that the conversion system will be available starting next week for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games on disc.
