Xbox May Announce New Games Only When They Are Close to Release
According to sources cited by journalist Jez Corden, Microsoft Gaming may have changed its strategy when it comes to announcing new games from Xbox Studios. In the future, reveals would happen only when a game is already well into development and its release window is clearly defined.
In an article published on Windows Central, Corden explains that “the era of Microsoft doing game announcements far in advance of product completion is absolutely over.” Situations like Fable, revealed back in 2020 and expected to launch in autumn 2026, should no longer happen. The new approach would also help avoid cases like Contraband, Perfect Dark, etc — games announced too early, then disappearing for years or ending up cancelled, which led to disappointment among fans and harmed the Xbox brand.
Announcements Closer to Launch
Corden states that his sources confirmed Microsoft wants to avoid revealing games too early in development. By waiting until projects are closer to completion, the company aims to reduce the risk of long silences, delays, or cancellations that can frustrate players.
This would mean fewer early teasers, but clearer communication and more realistic expectations around launch timing.
These claims should still be taken with caution, even though Corden has often proven to have reliable contacts within Microsoft Gaming. That said, signs of this new direction are already visible.
