Microsoft have good reason to celebrate today as the Xbox One gets off to a stellar launch, and yes there have been a few reports of broken units, faulty software and so on, but this is not uncommon for nearly any hardware launch these days. Minor bumps aside, Microsoft have shifted 1 million Xbox One hardware units within 24 hours, matching the hefty sales target set by Sony last week.
This is obviously a great achievement and a solid start for the console, but it didn’t exactly sell as well as the PlayStation 4 did when you look at the numbers a little closer. The Xbox One sold that million units in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the U.K., U.S., and New Zealand combined. The PlayStation 4 did it in the US and Canada alone, that’s 11 more countries than the PlayStation 4 and Sony have yet to play their biggest hand.
There is no doubt these consoles will both sell in astronomical figures, but Microsoft have just launched on their home turf, as well as many other countries. Sony have their European launch this weekend and their biggest market, Japan hits next year, something that should pick up sales after the Christmas chaos has died down.
So sure, the PlayStation 4 is technically in a better position at the moment, but it did have a minor head start as well as a lower price and this is a marathon, not a sprint. Who will win in the end is anyone’s guess.
