Xbox Series X Could Get Its Own “Pro” Upgrade in 2027 Through AMD FSR 4
When Sony announced PS5 Pro, many people expected Microsoft to respond with its own upgraded console. That happened in the previous generation, when PS4 Pro was matched by Xbox One X.
But things have changed. With console sales becoming lower and lower, Xbox reportedly did not want to spend the resources needed to launch a new hardware revision.
However, there may be another option for current models. The key could be FSR 4, AMD’s upscaling technology, and its compatibility with Xbox Series X hardware.
AMD FSR 4 Could Turn Xbox Series X Into a “Pro” Model
According to Tweak Town, AMD recently announced that the new FSR 4.1 upscaling system will support both RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 graphics cards.
The update will arrive in two stages. RDNA 3 hardware will receive support in July, while RDNA 2 devices will need to wait until 2027. This is important because Xbox Series X hardware is based on RDNA 2 technology, meaning it could also support FSR 4.1.
The system would reportedly work directly on the console and instantly provide 4K images with more detail, while also reducing ghosting and motion blur.
Tests of FSR 4.1 have reportedly shown very strong results, and the technology is also expected to work on devices such as ROG Xbox Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw A8, and even Steam Machine systems.
This kind of update also fits with plans mentioned by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. She previously said Xbox would receive regular revisions and updates to give the platform longer support.
If FSR 4.1 eventually comes to Xbox Series X, many fans would have loved to see it used with major upcoming games like Fable and Gears of War: E-Day, but they may need to wait a little longer.
If the visual upgrade becomes official, it could extend the life of the current Xbox generation. In other words, Project Helix may no longer need to launch in 2027.
The good news is that Sharma’s team usually does not take long to confirm or deny rumors. Because of this, an official announcement for FSR 4.1 on Xbox Series X could happen during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.
