Microsoft is once again rumored to be working on a feature that would let Xbox players convert the license of their physical games into digital versions.
The report comes from insider eXtas1s, who says he received an email from a user known as Retro Gamer. The message reportedly included details about Microsoft’s plans for several upcoming Xbox features.
According to the rumor, a “Disc to Digital” beta was made available to Xbox Insiders in July 2026. At the same time, early access to backward compatibility for original Xbox games on PC was also said to begin.
Xbox Could Soon Let Players Convert Physical Games to Digital
The same roadmap suggests that the official launch of the Disc to Digital feature is planned for August 2026, possibly with a major announcement during Gamescom.
The roadmap also claims that October 2026 will bring full backward compatibility for original Xbox games on PC. These titles are expected to be available through the Xbox Store and Xbox Game Pass.
The report also mentions that Xbox 360 games could arrive on newer platforms between 2027 and 2028.
If the leaked email is accurate, the new feature could appear very soon. It is still unclear how the system would work, but one possibility is that Xbox consoles would need an update requiring an online check before launching games from a disc. This could prevent users from converting a physical copy into a digital license while continuing to use the original disc offline on another console.
For now, Microsoft has not officially confirmed the feature, so the information should be treated as a rumor until an announcement is made.
