Russia Today reports that web analytics firm comScore now believes Yahoo now tops U.S internet traffic. The report states that Yahoo is now bigger than Google for July 2013. For the month of July 2013 Yahoo sites attracted 196,564,000 unique visitors while Google was close behind with 192,251,000. Google was followed by Microsoft, Facebook and AOL.
Google had held comScore’s number one spot every month since April 2008 except for two occasions. Yahoo was last top in May 2011 and according to comScore they aren’t quite sure how Yahoo has managed to come top again. While Yahoo recently acquired social blogging platform Tumblr apparently this was not included in the statistics.
“Yahoo’s showing is an important symbol that Mayer can rightfully point to as an indication that the company at least is no longer losing ground, Mayer herself noted during Yahoo’s second-quarter conference call that its traffic had risen in June from a year ago, which she said was unprecedented for an established company that had been on the decline.” Stated Rober Hof – a contributer to Forbes.
Despite Yahoo claiming victory from these latest figures comScore have said it could just be a fluke and due to seasonal variation. The figures also exclude the mobile market which has potentially huge implications as Yahoo lack presence in the mobile market. comScore claim a lot of the surge from Yahoo’s side was driven by online retail.
