I am not a huge fan of YouTube. Well, more accurately, there are very few streamers who I actively watch on it. I feel I need to make that distinction as there have been numerous occasions where I’ve taken a last look on the website before I went to bed only to find that 2 hours later I was watching a video on how to remove bees from a cavity wall.
In terms of gaming videos though, with the popularity of streamers and games such as Fortnite and PUBG, it’s hardly surprising to see that this format is one of the video hosting sites most popular form of content. In a report via PCGamesN, however, the website has reported that over 5.7 million years worth of gaming videos were watched just in 2018.
The numbers seem fantastical, but with my crude maths, this would mean that every single person on the planet has effectively watched at least 8 hours of gaming videos throughout the year. For every person you know that hasn’t, it means that someone else has watched twice as much. It’s crazy numbers and a possible testament to how much time we have wasted watching others play games.
While this might be a terrible indication of society, it does clearly highlight how media is changing. Despite the regular criticism it receives, YouTube is still amazingly popular and continues to grow. It would, of course, be interesting to see how Twitch figures compare here though. Perhaps they will oblige our curiosity in the coming weeks.
