YouTube are testing a program which cracks down on those who use Ad blockers with new restrictions only allowing them to watch 3 videos.
This possible change was first Spotted on Reddit by u/Reddit_n_Me who was met with a message which stated “Video player will be blocked after 3 videos” citing their use of an ad blocker providing them the option of allowing YouTube ads or trying YouTube premium. This is not an unsurprising move as Ads are the key source of revenue for the platform allowing it to stay free despite how awful most of the ads are, especially the mobile ads which are either bad or overly sexualised.
BleepingComputer reached out to YouTube for a comment on this matter who responded “We’re running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium,” but did not confirm how many or what locations are involved in the experiment. Youtube was also asked if they intend on blocking users from accessing the platform for using AdBlock and stated that they would disable playback only in extreme cases through persistent use of AdBlock.
Whilst Ads suck and plague most web pages, they’re income for many people so unfortunately we’re going to have to live with it, until someone makes an AdBlock that bypasses this system. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
