1More Spearhead VR BT In-Ear Headphones Review

A Closer Look and Performance

First impressions are great, as these remind me of the truly fantastic 1More Triple Driver headphones we reviewed a few months back. The Triple headphones are more expensive, and more tuned towards just audio rather than gaming too. Not that the VR headphones are cheap, but they’re targeted more at the consumer/gaming market as well. This is most notable with the classic red and black design, which looks more “gamer” than their previous headphones. Overall though, I rather like the colour scheme.

10mm Drivers

The drivers are an in-ear design, with enlarged drivers on the rear, and softer earbuds that sit into the ear. This means you can squeeze a 10mm driver into the smaller form factor, allowing for a much bigger sound overall. That being said though, they’re still pretty lightweight. Not that their last set was uncomfortable, but these lighter design here clocks in at just 32g which is very impressive.

The cables are very nice quality too. They’re pretty thin, but they’re coated to give them added durability. Plus, the red finish looks superb. Down the side of the drivers, you’ll see a small opening, which is for the ENC microphones. That’s not noise cancelling tech for the audio, but rather for the voice chat. You might not hear the difference, but your buddies in team chat will all agree you sound superb. The drivers are great though, and with the swappable earbuds, you can easily find a fit that’s perfect for you. It’s a standard fitting too, so you can easily use your favourite after-market buds to suit your needs too.

Neckband

The headphones are wireless, albeit the neckband deals with the wireless part. The drivers are obviously wired, but it is such a short wire anyway. The benefit of this vs regular in-ear headphones with everything crammed into the drivers are plentiful. You can have lighter earbuds, bigger drivers, a bigger battery, power powerful amp, more control, better wireless hardware… oh and of course, the 1More has all of those things.

It’s also a very comfortable design, the neckband is quite soft and just hangs around your neck easily enough. The benefit here is that it doesn’t mess up your trendy hair, and those with long hair will find it can be hidden beneath it easily too.

Built-in Control

The added neckband offers up all kinds of cool features too. Down the left side, you’ll find this fantastic interface for skipping tracks and controlling the volume. There’s a call/wake button that’s perfect for play/pause, taking calls, waking your smart assistant etc too. Furthermore, towards the front, there’s a built-in microphone that’s perfectly placed for voice chat too.

The other side is a little blander. However, it’s this side that houses some of the batteries and wireless gear. Of course, it’s also weight balanced with the otherside, keeping things nice and stable.

Quick Charge

On the base, you’ll find a rubber cover that can be lifted out. Behind it, there’s a USB charging port. The 120mAh battery is good for around 6 hours of music at high volumes. Personally, I’ve gotten way beyond that out of it, but that all depends on how you use the headphones I guess. The best thing is you can quick charge it for 10 minutes, and get 3 hours of use out of it. If it did run out while gaming, that charge will be done by the time you’ve grabbed a snack and stretched your legs.

All Around Sound

The performance of the headphones is phenomenal, and honestly, I wouldn’t expect anything less from 1More. The bass response is superb, and dare I say it, as good as their triple driver models. Over Bluetooth, it makes a great gaming headset, especially with their 3D sound feature (via the app). It makes the soundstage a fixed object in the room, turn your head and the sound comes from a point where a virtual speaker would be, rather than turning with you. It feels less like headphones, more like surround sound.

Punchy Bass

The drivers are plenty powerful though, offering a lot of volume when you have the need for it. However, it’s brilliantly detailed and distortion free even when cranked. Music lovers will find a lot to appreciate, and sitting on the train rocking out to some Devin Townsend couldn’t have been more enjoyable. Deep bass, warm mid tones and bright treble really bring out the best in your music.

Wireless Performance

The same is true for movies and gaming, they sound bigger and more detailed than one would expect from in-ear drivers. Plus the wireless feature means you’re not tripping over cables while gaming, and that’s always a bonus. You can just kick your feet up and relax. The wireless range (BT 4.2) is a whopping 35ft too. That means I can play music from my Alexa or phone while I’m in the office and walk freely around the room.

As a child still in my 30's (but not for long), I spend my day combining my love of music and movies with a life-long passion for gaming, from arcade classics and retro consoles to the latest high-end PC and console games. So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
