Akasa Raptor White Chassis Review

Final Thoughts
This case is certainly nice, it has that slight re-fashioned old look and certainly looks professional and stylish. That said, there were a few things that didn’t impress me. The motherboard is mounted too high, so that the Akasa Venom heatsink is extremely close to the top fan – which unfortunately reduces the efficiency of the top fan, so if you have a similarly large heatsink with twin fans you have to be very careful. On top of this, the cable management system doesn’t really exist in this case, it is very much a free for all. Yes, it does have holes in the motherboard tray for cables to pass through and such like but it doesn’t have the space behind the motherboard tray to deal with any excess of cables – and we always know cables are always too short or too long.

Before I get too stuck into a rant, there are lots of good things about this case, with the right cooling fans you will have pretty decent airflow through the system and the inclusion of a 140mm fan at the top is definitely a plus. That said, I’m not quite sure how this stands out from the crowd, it is an average case that looks quite good. Akasa haven’t exactly produced a engineering or a design revolution with this case, in fact, more the opposite. Considering how new it is, they seem to have gone back 10 years and tried to copy those designs with a few extra fans, instead of looking at other leading companies.

Finally, I did have a few problems with this case, the DVD/CD drive slots on the front part of the case are very flimsy and pivoted with a tiny bit of plastic, if you accidentally apply any pressure on these they will break, they are just too feeble for a front of a case where they will take the odd bang etc. On top of this, the sides of the case are a bit too flimsy, they are not rigid like their competitiors – which is surprising as the rest of the case is pretty solid.

In summary, this is not a bad case, it is certainly very functional and practical, but we have come to expect a slightly higher standard of design and engineering from Akasa – there’s nothing special about this case – and that is certainly a let down.

Pros:

  • Good value for money
  • Looks pretty stylish
  • Mostly a solid case
  • Allows for very good airflow through the system
  • Easy to use toolfree mechanisms

Cons:

  • Certain areas of the case are a bit flimsy
  • Case has no wow factor to stand out from the crowd
  • No USB 3.0 support + only 2 USB 2.0 on the front

We would like to thank Akasa for supplying this sample
