AMD Radeon 6X50 Refresh to Completely Replace Base Versions?

Earlier this month information appeared online suggesting that the AMD Radeon 6000 series of graphics cards were set to get a refresh with three new models being specifically touted. The Radeon RX 6650 XT, 6750 XT, and presumable new flagship 6950 XT. – With a release date reportedly being set for May 10th, however, in terms of details, there were only two key points being raised. Firstly, they were going to be released in a ‘Midnight Black’ aesthetic (as per below), and secondly, when compared to the original models, they were likely set to see an increase in the memory speed with the 6950 XT going from 16GBps to 18GBps.

So, with an apparent May 10th release date, AMD is likely going to formally announce these new graphics cards before the end of the month. – Following a report via Videocardz, however, something rather unexpected has potentially been leaked about them. Namely, these are not so much refreshed GPUs as replacement models.

AMD Radeon 6000 Refresh GPUs are Actually Replacements?…

Now admittedly, take this with a grain of salt at the moment because, just to hammer the point home, these refreshed Radeon 6000 GPUs haven’t even yet been confirmed by AMD. – If this leak information is accurate, however, then we can likely wave goodbye to the 6600 XT, 6700 XT, and 6900 XT with these new 6X50 refresh models effectively taking their place. Well, for around 5 months until the Radeon 7000 series arrives.

What Do We Think?

While news that this refresh might be acting as a replacement is admittedly quite shocking, in some views, this makes a hell of a lot of sense. Namely, rather than adding three more GPUs to the pile of things we can’t currently buy, this will at least free up some stock allocation to, hopefully, see them hit the market in a reasonable quantity.

On the other hand, however, based on leaked retail information regarding the potential price of the 6650 XT, 6750 XT, and 6950 XT, AMD may also be replacing the base models to hide the fact that these new revisions are not looking to be cheap, and more so, will be notably more expensive than their original counterparts.

Overall, we’re not quite sure what to make of these new GPUs at the moment. Come May 10th, however, we’ll all undoubtedly have a much better idea!
