AMD RX 480 Clock Speed Shown For the First Time!

The Radeon RX 480 was unleashed last night during AMD’s Computex press conference and looks set to revolutionise the kind of performance possible on a tight budget. The graphics card’s unbelievable $199 starting price point almost defies belief and provides a superb entry point into VR gaming. Of course, VR headsets are still expensive, but the cost will come down eventually and become more mainstream. Furthermore, cheaper units may offer a good VR experience which means consumers can enjoy VR games without investing in something like the HTC Vive.
Whenever a new GPU arrives, it’s important to analyse its technical specification. So far, it seems likely that the RX 480 will offer similar performance to the R9 390 and slot in between the GTX 970 and GTX 980. According to an image captured from TechPowerUp, the GPU features a core clock of 1266MHz and is based on the C7DF:C7 graphics chipset. This is an interesting piece of information and I wonder how much headroom there is for overclocking using the stock cooler. Apparently the memory is clocked at an effective speed of 8000MHz and we’re looking forward to testing the RX 480 in a number of benchmarks including DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles.
Honestly, I am really surprised by the RX 480’s incredible price and it should help AMD to make significant gains in the discrete GPU market.
