A Closer Look
The PSU has a very basic look that will allow it to blend into any case. It is covered in a good quality, slightly textured paint that is unlikely to scratch. It is a shame that there was not any design features on this unit, however keeping it like this will lower the price and make it look professional and clean in whichever case you want. Although it would not have increased the price too much by putting a design on the label such as what we have seen from Corsair.
The top of this PSU is completely clean save for a single screw in the middle. It gives a professional feel and the lack of design definitely does not interfere with the quality feel of the PSU.
On the bottom of the PSU we can see a 120mm fan that is designed to cool the unit quietly, we will look at this in more detail in a moment. There is a nice looking fan grill that will make the PSU look more interesting when installed with the fan-side up.
On the rear we can see that there is plenty of ventilation to allow the hot air to escape from inside the unit. As exhaust fans are seldom used on modern PSUs, a rear grill that causes minimal impedance on the escaping air is vital, otherwise the fan has to push harder to get the air out. This grill allows air to flow through a lot easier than honeycomb mesh we see on most PSUs. Other than that there is a simple On/Off switch and a socket for a kettle plug that accepts both 230V and 115V.
The front of the PSU is reserved for the cabling. We discussed the various cables earlier, but we can see that unlike most modular PSUs, this unit has a large amount of cables hard-wired. This is a good idea from Antec as the plugs required to boot the system are included such as the motherboard connections, HDD connections and Molex connections for various accessories. This design reduces cost as it means that a simpler modular control board can be used and it has no detrimental effects.
The PSU is fairly small considering its wattage which is owed to it’s efficient internal layout which we will see later. This will allow it to fit into most cases including SFF cases, making this a good option for a high-performance SFF build which are becoming very popualar.
A modular design is the main aspect of this power supply, but most cables are hard-wired for convenience. This includes the 24-pin ATX power connector, various 4+4 and 8 pin power connectors for your motherboard as well as a healthy amount of PCI-Express power connectors.
