AOC AGON Gaming 16G3 144Hz Portable Gaming Monitor Review

How Much Does it Cost?

It’s not cheap, with retail prices starting at around £260 right now. Obviously, that’s a lot for a 1080p monitor, when you can get a desktop variant for nearly half that. However, this ISN’T a desktop variant, it’s much more than that. With USB-C display input and mini-HDMI, it can be used on laptops/notebooks, with your tablet or mobile device, or a wide range of compact and desktop PC solutions using Thunderbolt or other compatible USB-C display outputs. It’s also extremely portable, and with the carry case, it’ll fit in your backpack or laptop bag alongside your system easily enough, so it can go where you go.

Overview

We have a similar AOC model in the office that we travel with, as it allows us to set up a double or even a triple-screen configuration on our editing laptop, making video editing on the go much easier. However, I can see the more specific appeal of this gaming version for eSports players who are required to travel. If you’ve got a backpack with your Xbox or PlayStation, you can throw this display on the tablet at your hotel, at the airport, or even at an event, and get playing in minutes.

Perhaps you travel a lot for work? Then again, something like this would be perfect. I could even see it being easy to mount on the back seat of a car, should you have some in-car gaming system such as a laptop, mini-PC or similar, allowing the kids or yourself to play should the occasion arise.

Again, these are pretty limited examples, but it’s a niche product and if you’re only thinking of buying it to leave it at home as a secondary display, which you could do, then frankly there are more affordable options out there, and better options available for the same amount of money.

However, if you want something that has all the premium gaming features you get at home, but in a form factor that allows you to take it anywhere in the world with you, then there’s really no contest here. It promised to deliver a very specific experience, and it did so perfectly. Highly recommended, albeit, to a very select type of gamer only.
