New research reportedly shows that Apple could be slowing down older devices when releasing new ones in an effort to prompt users buying the latest model.
Harford University Ph.D. student Laura Trucco and economics professor Sendhil Mullainathan have noticed that shortly after a new model is released there are far more searches as to why iphones are running slow. This could be due to people pining for the latest release and hoping to find ways of speeding up their old devices.Searching for the same trends for other manufacturers did not yield the same results however.
Apple certainly have the capability to slow devices down if they so wished as they produce both the hardware and the software. 90% of apples users are using the latest available update. it could backfire on them though, people could move to other manufacturers if they notice their Apple device running slower.
As these trends are based on what people search for on Google, this information might have to be taken with a pinch of salt, but with people seemingly confirming the allegations on many forums, they have certainly fuelled the rumours. it will be interesting to see if the same thing happens when the iPhone 6 is releases later this year.
