Privileges: User, Groups, and Shared Folders

With the storage sorted, it’s time to take a look at the user privileges. This includes users, user groups, and shared folders as well as application privileges. Again, ASUSTOR collected everything that’s connected in a single app. A very convenient setup for first-time users. They’ll quickly and easily find what they’re looking for.

User Management

ADM supports both local and domain users. There is a theoretical limitation of 4096 users, but it’s doubtful that many people will reach that amount. With such a large amount possible users, you easily can create a user for all your friends, family members, and co-workers. Each user has their own setup, folder access rights, and application privileges.

ADM also has a feature to create multiple users at once. That is a particularly useful feature for situations such as hosting courses, events, and similar things. You can easily create a lot of users with the same settings within a very short time.

User Groups

Micro-managing every single user can be a real pain and that’s where user groups come into play. With them, you can set rights and privileges for a whole group at once. A much quicker way to make changes, whether they’re permanent or temporary.

Shared Folders

Shared folders are a corner stone of every NAS. These are the folders you can mount as drives and access from your various systems. Some apps will create their own folders and you can create plenty more yourself.

ISO files stored on your NAS, or in a NAS accessible folder, can also be mounted as virtual drives. A clever way to utilise your disk backups. ADM 3.0 can even mount CIFS (Windows) shares from other systems and share them out as part of its own network setup. An easy way to collect all network shares in a single location.

App Privileges

The last part of the privilege setup is for the installed apps. You can install a lot of extra functions to ADM through the App Center. While that’s great, you might not want every user to have the same access to the various apps. Luckily, you don’t need to. You can set and defile access for all users to all apps.
