Despite power supplies having a set level of performance (in this case, 750w) it’s never unusual to find a little wiggle-room beyond this. You know, in instances where people do (ill-advisedly) push their system components a little too hard for the PSU to ‘officially’ handle.
When this does occur, however, it’s important to know that the OPP’s work. Namely, in shutting down the power supply before it enters the risk of damaging itself or your components.
So, how did the be quiet! Straight Power 11 do? Well, the short answer is, generally well. We can confirm that the OPP kicked in exactly as it should. The only matter of some surprise was that it occurred (comparatively speaking) quite early. Usually, a power supply can draw 15-25% over the rated amount before the protections will trigger. In this instance, however, it was only 11%.
So, the good news is that the OPP protection works and, yes, there is some margin of error. The bad news is, it’s not particularly big. So you’re going to want to make 100% certain that before purchasing this power supply, you know exactly how much your system needs. A factor which, in fairness, should be part of every good system build.
