World of Warcraft’s Next Expansion Name Confirmed After Blizzard Blunder

World of Warcraft

I think it would be fair to say that World of Warcraft isn’t what it once was. And that’s not, incidentally, any kind of criticism as, by and large, the game has always remained fairly decent. – If anything though, the biggest problem that has faced World of Warcraft over the last 8 or so years is the fact that even despite the release of new expansions, and putting all the controversies at Blizzard to one side, the game has largely pretty much remained the same at its core. You grind, you get gear, you grind some more. – This is perhaps a key reason why even after years of requests from the community, the ‘Classic‘ version of the game followed a similar pattern of growth at launch then a sharp decline after.

So, with this in mind, with a new WoW expansion set for release this year (presuming things stick with the 2-year pattern), will it finally be able to solve all the problems the game has and get it back to its former glory? Probably not. – Following a report via PCGamesN, however, it does appear that Blizzard may have accidentally confirmed what it’s going to be called at least.

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight

Following a dive into the game’s official website, several references to ‘Dragonflight’ have been found within the code that would only seem to confirm, based on the apparent tiered release approach coming in the exact same style as ‘Shadowlands’, that this is the name of the next official World of Warcraft expansion that’s likely set to be revealed on April 19th.

Now, beyond that point, this is where the information ends. I mean, you can literally take out of ‘Dragonflight’ exactly as much as you want. I mean, I presume that dragons are going to be involved… Flying ones too probably… Beyond that though, (and just in case you can’t tell that I’m being sarcastic), it still remains a mystery as to exactly what this new expansion will hold.

Don’t Believe the Hype!

As above though, given that WoW is currently retaining (just about) 40% of its peak player base, while a lot of hyperbole might say otherwise, the game is still a long way from dying. I mean, there are still over 5 million people a month paying that (what I now consider extortionate) subscription fee. – For years though, it’s stagnated. And the smell is starting to put even its most hardcore supporters off.

Let’s just hope this new ‘Dragonflight’ expansion can do something to remedy that. Albeit, these days, WoW expansions always seem to feel like more of a bandaid than a fix.

What do you think? Do you still play World of Warcraft? If not (and you did at one point) what was the tipping point that made you quit? – Let us know in the comments!
