Cherry Unveils latest Switch Design at CES 2018

Cherry

It’s been a little while since we had a new entry to the switch market from Cherry, but at CES 2018, they’re coming out swinging. Their latest switch looks set to be the last word in low-profile mechanical switch designs. Sure, there are solutions on the market already, but Cherry has such a strong reputation for their engineering, and after a brief demo, we honestly feel like they’ve nailed the design.

With slim keyboards becoming more popular, and the notebook/laptop market still fighting over the best way to get that mechanical feel, we can see these being a huge hit within the market for years to come.

Cherry created many versions, but testers said it didn’t have that “cherry feel” despite having the exact same force required. Because of the reduced weight of the slim key cap, the force was increased ever so slightly to compensate. It’s hard to explain, but to type on, they now feel unmistakably “Cherry-like”. They’re basically MX Speed in a low profile housing, which is a win win.

The keys still allow for an impressive 3mm of travel with a 1mm thin keycap. That’s just 0.8mm less than a standard switch, and amazing given that the switch is 35% less deep than a standard one. Rated for 50 million plus actuations, we can’t wait to see more keyboards launch with these switches.
