Corsair Obsidian 900D Super Tower Chassis Review

Final Thoughts

Price

At £300 the Corsair 900D is extremely expensive, it is one of the most expensive consumer chassis on the market, but in that respect it is also one of the biggest, and packs more features that most other chassis, so in many respects you are getting what you pay for. However, given the kind of system build this is designed for, for example four GTX Titan cards, dual socket motherboard, dual PSU’s and more, £300 is hardly the most expensive component you’ll be purchasing, so when you look at it like this, its high price isn’t all that bad.

Overview

Where do I start, this thing is absolutely insane. I sits in our office like a practical joke, it is absolutely huge compared to most any other chassis on the market. My own personal chassis, the 750D is a big case, but it looks like a shoe box next to the 900D. It is important that when working on a build that requires this much internal space, to ensure that you have enough room in your house or office just to situate it. Even with our modest build inside it this chassis became incredibly heavy, there is a lot of metal here and lifting it can be difficult. If you were to put a water cooled rig in here, you may want to invest in a LAN trolley.

Build quality is near perfect, the only thing I noticed out of place was the plastic clips for the 5.25″ drive bays, and that really is clutching at straws to find something wrong with the chassis. If you kicked this thing, it would be your foot that took all the damage, simple as that. On top of the robust build quality, you’ll also find the chassis easy to maintain, despite its epic size. Magnetic dust filters on the sides, washable filters on the top and front panels, easy access side panels and more all keep things nice and simple to maintain.

Component compatibility is impressive, extensive radiator support is certainly a welcome feature and the fact that the hard drive bays are highly modular is a great bonus. Should you want extra cooling, it is easy to make room for keeping a monster rendering rig in check. However, if you want to pack 15 hard drives in and build a behemoth of a server, then you have that flexibility. Sure there are cheaper cases on the market that can do either, but its rare that you see both being capable on this scale.

Style is subjective, but Corsair were absolutely right when they said “understated overkill”, from the front it’s sleek and bold, yet it has the capacity to be as insane as you want it to be. Enthusiasts are going to love every inch of this chassis and while there are some interesting alternatives on the market from brands such as Lian Li and Fractal, there is nothing out there that offers the same kind of flexibility as the 900D.

Pros

  • High component compatibility
  • Extensive water cooling support
  • Room for massive amounts of storage
  • Modular HDD bays
  • Robust build quality
  • Huge side panel window
  • Dual side panel design allows for easy maintenance
  • Dust filters
  • Extensive cable routing options
  • Very easy to work with
  • Dual PSU support

Cons

  • Too big for most desk spaces
  • High price tag

“This chassis was never going to be anything less than incredible, it is easily one of the greatest chassis ever made. Sure it isn’t going to be idea for your average user, but this is not an average chassis. If you have the budget for it and the capability to do it justice with an epic build, then you’ll love the 900D.”
