Crucial MX300 2TB 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

At the time of writing, Crucial’s MX300 with 2TB capacity can be found at NewEgg for just $549.99, at Overclockers UK for £499.99, or through Geizhals for $522.10.

Conclusion

I was already quite impressed with the Crucial MX300 when I had a look at the 750GB model at release time and that hasn’t changed one bit through the look at the 2TB model today. It is an awesome drive the combines the best of two worlds into one drive – and it provides a massive capacity at the same time.

Most TLC-based drives have one problem and that is a loss of performance during continuous linear operations. The Crucial MX300 also drops a little, but nothing compared to other drives that I’ve tested and still manages to stay above the 300MB/s in these situations. Competitor drives drop to near and sometimes below HDD performance in these situations and that’s something that Crucial effectively combated with the MX300.

The MX300 series is a drive that has been designed with one thing in mind: to let the users get rid of their old mechanical hard drives. They are slow and they are loud where SSDs are fast and completely silent. There are no moving parts that can make any noise which also makes them a lot more robust. This is particularly useful for portable computers as they are the ones most prone to drive damage due to shock.

With a massive capacity of 2TB like the MX300 has, you only need one drive in your system rather that two or even three. This is again hugely beneficial to mobile systems that in most cases only have room for one drive. With 2TB capacity, you don’t need to worry about which files you take with you or which games you install. There is plenty of space for everything. And when we consider that 2TB basically is the max for mechanical drives of the same physical size, it’s even better. There is no need to compromise between space and speed anymore. Install your entire game library and be ready to play what you want when you want it.

The Momentum cache further increases the benefits of Crucial’s MX300 drive and it takes the performance to a whole new level by using just a little of your system memory as a cache. It increases the overall system response times as well as drive performance significant and I can highly recommend this feature. But even without the Momentum Cache enabled, the MX300 delivers a great performance. It isn’t the fastest drive in the market segment as-is, but when you put everything together coupled with the features and software, then you got an easy winner. Well done Crucial!
