DayZ Has Officially Sold Over 4 Million Copies

Nearly 5 years ago, DayZ launched in early access for PC. It was one of the first games to really kick off the more modern revival of the ‘zombie survival horror’ franchise. The game set players on an absolutely huge map with a number of other players all looking to survive.

It quickly became one of the hottest games on Steam and YouTube and initially saw a lot of success. Then it stopped. Ok, that isn’t entirely fair, but for a 2-3 year period, the development of the game stagnated horrifically. Whatever early success they had was blown due to several reasons including a change of engine and even a change of management.

Well, with the recent release of the official Beta (yes, it only took 4 years and 11 months to go beta) Bohemia Interactive has announced that the game has just topped 4 million sales.

Huge Sales Despite It Being In Early Access

In a report via DSOGaming, Eugen Harton, the lead developer of DayZ for Bohemia Interactive has said: “It’s always nice to see new players trying DayZ, but what’s probably even more important to me is that our existing community is slowly coming back into the game after taking a break. We have dozens of community servers opening again and experimenting with early mods. We’ve more than doubled our daily active players count after the PC BETA. And that’s with a game that still needs a lot of polishing and bug fixes. The growing excitement is such a welcome change, especially after the last two years that were really tough for us and the community alike.”

While it is clearly impressive to hear that 4 million copies have been sold, I’m a little sceptical. Why? Well, I suspect that probably 3 million of those people stopped playing 3 years ago. With this due to release 1.0 before the end of the year though, it might grab some of them back. Personally, though, I doubt it. I suspect that the damage has been done.
