The piracy problem is tough to crack. However, games are receiving much better protection that they did years ago, mostly thanks to the Denuvo anti-tamper tech. The previous iterations of this solution managed to protect some games for quite a bit of time. Other titles were much easier to compromise quickly after release. The most recent version of the technology, namely 4.8, was a real beast to say the least. It protected games such as Assassin’s Creed: Origins, Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Injustice 2 with great success. The thing is, it appears that this version has now been compromised as well.
Cracking Denuvo 4.8 might be a great win for pirates, but this doesn’t mean that they’ll be downloading Assassin’s Creed: Origins anytime soon. That particular game also has VMProtect, which could definitely complicate things. At the time of writing, only Sonic Forces has received a true, working crack, but this is also more of a bypass. This means that Denuvo is still running in the background, thus there won’t be any performance gains.
What will Denuvo do now? Probably release a brand new version, if you ask me. Shortly after a game is cracked, publishers usually decide to drop Denuvo, which makes sense. In the end, as long as a game is protected during the first month of its release, the anti-tamper tech is can be considered successful.
