EA Thinks Learning to Play Games is Too Difficult

“Challenge Everything”, EA said, including, it seems, the difficulty of its own games. Richard Hilleman, EA’s Chief Creative Officer, took part in a group interview at the D.I.C.E. summit in Las Vegas on Thursday, where he said, “Our games are actually still too hard to learn. The average player probably spends two hours to learn how to play the most basic game.”

Hilleman continued, saying that, “asking for two hours of somebody’s time–most of our customers, between their normal family lives […] to find two contiguous hours to concentrate on learning how to play a video game is a big ask”.

During the same interview session, the design director on Shadow of Mordor Michael de Plater suggested that games could become more complex, incorporating more RPG elements. Plater said, “Every game is an RPG now. You wouldn’t make a game without progression and levels and XP. And I think every game is going to be a social game…good ideas propagate.”
