Enermax Platimax 850W Semi Modular Power Supply Review

The Enermax Platimax 850W costs around £200 in the UK and we’ve seen it for around $229.99 in the USA. We can see Enermax’s Platimax commands a very premium price point. While the Enermax Platimax 850W power supply is a unit with exceptional voltage regulation, great PFC and very quiet operation I was still slightly disappointed to see it miss 80 Plus Platinum standards at some load scenarios which isn’t ideal given it is rated for 80 Plus Platinum. That minor blip aside it is easy to see that the Enermax Platimax 850W PSU is built from the ground up for high quality power and looks the business, particular the black powder coat which is a really nice touch (quite literally as it feels great). We can also see Enermax’s fan expertise going to good use as their 140mm Twister bearing fan keeps this unit running cool and quiet.

So if you’re looking for a quiet, high quality and high performance power supply to power a multi-GPU system in an efficient way, then the Enermax Platimax 850W power supply is probably for you. That said if cable aesthetics are a big deal to you then the fact this unit isn’t fully modular and doesn’t use black cables might put you off. However, if aesthetics are just a side-issue then you can’t really choose a better power supply than the Enermax Platimax 850W. It delivers high quality power, high quality components and a premium warranty. Of course there are other options to consider for the same wattage and price point but we certainly wouldn’t direct anyone away from this unit because it truly is a very good power supply that comes highly recommended from eTeknix.

Pros

  • Tight voltage regulation on all rails
  • High efficiency
  • Consistently high PFC levels
  • Generally quiet
  • 5 year warranty
  • High quality components

Cons

  • Not fully modular
  • Cables won’t be to everyone’s taste in terms of braiding and colour schemes
  • Expensive
  • Loud at 100% load
  • Falls a tiny bit short of its rated 80 Plus Platinum specification
  • UK availability is hit and miss

eTeknix says: “The Enermax Platimax 850W power supply delivers a high level of efficiency, PFC and voltage regulation to keep any single, dual and triple GPU system running optimally with safe clean power. Enermax’s attention to detail with an extensive warranty and high quality components really makes them a force to be reckoned with. However, the Enermax Platimax 850W does command a significant price premium and lacks fully modular black cabling which is something the picky enthusiast may want to consider when making their buying decision.”
